29 April 2009: Gordonstoun School, Moray
Gordonstoun School was founded in 1934 by Dr Kurt Hahn, former headmaster of Salem School in Germany. He fled Germany in 1933 and set up the new school on the Morayshire estate within two historic 17th century buildings, Gordonstoun House and Round Square. During the war the school pupils were evacuated to Wales to study, only to return to find Gordonstoun House badly damaged by fire. Today the school is famous for having educated three generations of the royal family.
Dr Kurt Hahn was also the founder of Outward Bound and the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, and Gordonstoun was well known for its strict outdoors regime. This is something the school pupils have experienced this week as they adopt the original 1930s timetable to celebrate the school's 75th anniversary.
