8 July 2009: Meadowbank Sports Centre

Designed by Edinburgh City Council Architects Department and built in 1968, Meadowbank Sports Centre was the main venue for the 1970 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games, and also hosted the 1986 Commonwealth Games.

With the long-term future of Meadowbank a matter of ongoing public debate, RCAHMS has recorded the architectural detail of the sports complex, velodrome and old stadium while they are in full working use. The importance of the velodrome in developing Scottish sporting stars has recently been highlighted by the achievements of Britain’s most successful Olympian Sir Chris Hoy, who first took up track cycling at Meadowbank.

RCAHMS will be visiting Glasgow in the near future to survey the site of the forthcoming 2014 Commonwealth Games before development work begins.
