Policy

The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) is the principal source of information and archive for Scotland's archaeology, buildings and maritime heritage. There are several million items in the collections and some 250,000 archaeological sites, buildings or wrecks recorded in the database. It is the policy of RCAHMS to make all information and collections material available to the public (subject to terms of deposit of external collections).

  Access

Visitors can consult all the information, photographs, drawings or other material in the collections in the public search room in Edinburgh. For remote users, the Canmore database offers access to information and the index to the collections held in RCAHMS. As part of the ongoing development of this service to the public, digital copies of a selection of items in the collection will be available on-line from July 2004. These images include Crown copyright: RCAHMS material, as well as other copyright material which RCAHMS is licensed to use. Further images will be added to the database on a regular basis and RCAHMS will negotiate with other copyright holders to acquire permission to make as much material as possible available to researchers on-line.

  Copyright

All the content (including images) available through Canmore is protected by copyright and the copyright owners are identified. Information and material from the archive of RCAHMS, and this website, can be copied or downloaded for private, non-commercial research but must not be recopied or circulated to a third party. Multiple copies can be made for use in the classroom or other formal educational purposes.
