An artificial mound of earth and/or turf and stone raised over one or more burials, often surrounded by a ditch. Sometimes only the ditch is visible as a cropmark, while occasionally a central pit indicates the position of a burial. Several different types of barrow have been recognised, dating from the Neolithic to the late Iron Age.
