A place of Christian worship. A chapel may be a room or recess set aside for private worship in a cathedral or church, a room or building used for worship in an otherwise non-religious institution such as a prison, hospital or college, or a freestanding building that is smaller than and subordinate to a church. In Scotland, chapels may belong to either Catholic or Protestant churches.
