Rare or unusual items

We have a fine collection of rare books, the earliest dating to 1743. Historical accounts of travels and tours around Scotland are a rich source of early descriptions of Scotland’s countryside, buildings and society. These are often illustrated with views of the landscape or houses long since vanished. Examples include:

  • University thesis and dissertations often from students who have used RCAHMS for their research
  • Unpublished leaflets and privately printed brochures
  • Research notes and papers
  • House sales brochures

Other Highlights

  • Agricultural surveys dating from the late 18th to the early 19th centuries
  • Sales particulars of Scottish estates with, in some cases, their associated castles
  • Early trade catalogues provide a valuable insight into the story of Scotland’s industrial past
