Rare or unusual items
We have a fine collection of rare books, the earliest dating to 1743. Historical accounts of travels and tours around Scotland are a rich source of early descriptions of Scotland’s countryside, buildings and society. These are often illustrated with views of the landscape or houses long since vanished. Examples include:
- University thesis and dissertations often from students who have used RCAHMS for their research
- Unpublished leaflets and privately printed brochures
- Research notes and papers
- House sales brochures
Other Highlights
- Agricultural surveys dating from the late 18th to the early 19th centuries
- Sales particulars of Scottish estates with, in some cases, their associated castles
- Early trade catalogues provide a valuable insight into the story of Scotland’s industrial past
