What is held in the collections?

The collections are rich in historical material such as drawings, engravings, early photographs, antiquarian books and models. Also available for consultation is a vast number of survey photographs which provide an unparalleled record of the appearance of Scottish cities, towns and villages as well as individual buildings and sites. Scotland's important industrial heritage is well represented, together with vernacular buildings, World War II sites, and modern buildings. Extensive collections of information and photographs relating to graveyards and gravestones are also held.

If you are interested in archaeological sites and monuments, the collections are an invaluable resource for anyone carrying out archaeological research. The principal components are excavation and survey documentary archives, including all modern projects financed by Historic Scotland; antiquarian material from the early 19th century onwards; the records compiled by the Ordnance Survey (OS) Archaeology Branch from 1950-1983, including microfilm copies of the OS Name Books; personal research archives from the work of individuals; and archaeological books and journals.

A number of important collections have been deposited in RCAHMS by other institutions, including the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS), Edinburgh City Architects, the Northern Lighthouse Board and the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.
