RCAHMS : our collections

The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) is the principal source of collections for Scotland’s archaeology, buildings and maritime heritage. There are several million items in the collections comprising photographs, drawings, manuscripts, aerial photographs and other visual and documentary material.

We actively seek and gather information and material from a wide range of sources for the collection. These include:

· the survey programmes of RCAHMS
· gifts
· material deposited on loan in order to make it available to the public
· purchase of material
· the survey of collections in other institutions or in private hands

The acquisition of material is governed by the Collections Policy.

For inspiration and ideas on how you can use our collection, see Exploring Your Heritage.
