  Canmore content

Information and catalogue entries are added to Canmore on a daily basis. RCAHMS also holds other information and collections items not currently accessible through Canmore but which will be made available on-line in due course.

Archaeological and maritime entries - the listing is as comprehensive as possible but there can be no guarantee that it is complete. Further research, field survey or aerial reconnaissance continually reveals additional sites of archaeological or historical interest.

Buildings - the listing relates to buildings for which RCAHMS holds catalogued photographs, drawings, manuscripts or books, as well as buildings which are Listed and considered by Historic Scotland to be of architectural or historic interest.

Access to archaeological sites, buildings or maritime sites

Most sites or buildings in Canmore are not open to the public and permission to visit should always be sought in advance from the owner or tenant. Details of shipwrecks are also included in Canmore and diving is not permitted on designated sites, except under licence. For access and safety information, divers must consult recognised diving guides.

Protection of archaeological sites, buildings or maritime sites

Many of the sites, buildings and maritime remains detailed in Canmore are protected by law and it is a criminal offence to damage them. It is also an offence to use a metal detector on a scheduled ancient monument. Find out more on the Protection of Sites page.
