Defending the Past photo competition
4 June 2010
At the end of June an expert judging panel will select the winning images in the competition to find the best photographs of Cape Wrath and North West Sutherland.
Part of RCAHMS Defending the Past project, the competition put a call out for images in four specific categories focusing on the different elements of the dramatic landscape of Cape Wrath and its surrounding area. Standards were incredibly high, and the best images will feature on playing cards for NATO soldiers. The four categories are:
- archaeology and architecture
- flora and fauna
- sea and coast
- mountain and moor
The thirteen best images in each category will be selected to feature on packs of playing cards given to soldiers who train at the Cape Wrath Training Centre, and will also be showcased at a community exhibition and online on RCAHMS website. Every winner will receive a pack of playing cards, and in addition the winners of the best image from each category will receive a copy of RCAHMS recent publication Above Scotland, which highlights some of the finest aerial photographs from the National Collection of Aerial Photography.
The aim of the Defending the Past project is to encourage appreciation and enjoyment of the built heritage contained within the remote yet dramatically beautiful Cape Wrath military training centre and its surrounding area, and to communicate this heritage to the thousands of NATO troops who come to the centre each year.
The closing date for the competition has now passed and no more entries will be accepted.
