Salt pans at Cock of Arran - click for a larger image
Enlarge this image SC358691

Drawing showing site plan of salt pans at Cock of Arran, Isle of Arran.

Coal was mined at this remote site on the North-East coast of Arran during the early 18th century. The Hamilton family ran a coal-fired saltpan here from 1710 to 1735, initially using workers from their saltpans in Bo'ness on the Firth of Forth.

This drawing, dating to 1979, shows a plan of the site. The semi-circular ended building (A) is the pan-house, or boiling-house. It is located near the shore for easy access to sea-water. The fore-house (B) next to it may also have been a bothy for the salters.

The two-roomed building (C) was a storehouse or girnal built in 1712, while the two ranges (D) were dwellings for the workers. The area marked (E) and (F) are the mouths of coal-pits, and building (G) probably accommodated the salt Excise Officer.
