20 May 2009: Laurencekirk Station

Laurencekirk Station was built by the Aberdeen Railway and first opened on 1 November 1849.  Although the railway line remained in use, the station closed on 4 September 1967 in an attempt by the British government to reduce the cost of running its railways.

This week, after a long-running campaign by local residents, Laurencekirk Station has reopened to regular passenger traffic after its 42-year closure.  Since the 1960s the B-listed station had fallen into disrepair and has recently undergone a £3 million renovation to restore the old station buildings to the original Victorian design and add modern fittings and facilities.

Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson arrived on a special train from Aberdeen on Monday to perform the opening ceremony.
