Frequently Asked Questions

Digital copies of a selection of images in the collections of RCAHMS are available on-line from July 2004.

  What images are available on-line?

There are some 60,000 images available on-line. These are drawn from the survey photographs, aerial photographs and drawings produced by RCAHMS, as well as other collections for which RCAHMS owns the rights or has established a licence with the copyright holder.

  Are more images available?

The number of images available represents only a tiny percentage of the items held in the RCAHMS Collections. We will continue to digitise material and to negotiate with other copyright holders to acquire permission to make as much material as possible available to researchers on-line.

Can I request an image to be made available on-line?

There are some 800,000 catalogue entries in Canmore and other entries are added on a daily basis. If you want to see a particular item that you have found on the Canmore database but which has not yet been digitised, please contact us with the site details and the archive number for each item, including your name and contact details, and reason for request. You can request up to 10 items.

We will arrange to digitise the items free of charge and make them available on-line at screen resolution (72dpi) within 8 - 10 weeks. Only items that are RCAHMS copyright will be digitised. Certain archive items may be unsuitable for digitisation at low-resolution (due to their nature or complexity) but we will advise you if this is the case.

You can also purchase high-resolution digital images or photographic prints. Please see our prices page for prices and details of the copying service.

What can I do with the on-line images?

Information and material from the archive of RCAHMS, and this website, can be copied or downloaded free of charge for private, non-commercial research but must not be recopied or circulated to a third party without written permission. For use in the classroom or for other formal educational use, multiple copies can be freely made.

  Are there any copyright restrictions?

All the images and contents of Canmore are protected by copyright and the copyright owner of each image is identified. If you want to use any of the images or information from Canmore for anything other than formal educational use or for non-commercial, private research, e.g. in publication, on a web-site, in a report, as a postcard etc., you will require written permission from us. We charge copyright reproduction fees. If the image is not our copyright, we will forward your request to the copyright holder.

Can I buy a copy of an on-line image?

High resolution digital images and photographic prints of most of the images displayed in Canmore may be purchased. For prices and details of the copying service see our prices page.

Can I see the original photograph or drawing?

Many of the on-line images are copies of photographs or drawings held in the collections of RCAHMS and can be consulted in the public search room at John Sinclair House, 16 Bernard Terrace, Edinburgh EH8 9NX. We are open from Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 4.30pm. However, some drawings are too fragile to handle and can only be consulted on-line. With the advent of digital photography some other images will only exist in a digital format.

Should any image have been incorrectly or inappropriately displayed on-line or if you have a question about any image, please contact us at info@rcahms.gov.uk.
