Local Authority Archaeological Liaison Project
Running from September 2008 until August 2009, the Local Authority Archaeological Liaison Project is working on a range of issues common to both RCAHMS and archaeologists working locally within Scotland’s Councils.
RCAHMS staff have visited each of Scotland’s 16 Sites and Monuments Records or Historic Environment Records and as a result of these meetings, work is underway to:
- Encourage more efficient data exchange between partners
- Identify the needs across the sector for archaeological data to be displayed as shapes (polygons) rather than points on digital maps
- Report on the IT resources that local authorities have available to them in advance of new European legislation on Geographic Information, soon to become Scottish law
- Develop a standard for the display of polygonised archaeological data
Other benefits of the Project include developing better understanding and communication between our organisations and increasing the representation of Scotland’s Local Authorities on PASTMAP.
The project is being carried out in partnership with the Association of Local Government Archaeological Officers (Scotland) and Historic Scotland.
