Local Authority Archaeology Services

For information and advice, or if you have an enquiry connected with planning, development or land management, you should contact your local authority archaeology service.

Their role is to:
1. Provide impartial, professional advice to their Councils on all archaeological matters
2. Where possible, protect and promote the archaeology of their area
3. Maintain Sites and Monuments Records containing details of all recorded archaeological features within their area - from earliest times to the present century
4. Provide information, consultation and advisory services for the public on archaeological matters especially the conservation, management and interpretation of archaeological and historic sites, monuments and landscapes
5. monitor all planning (including Permitted Development), forestry, and Countryside Premium Scheme proposals for possible archaeological implications
6. Monitor archaeological fieldwork carried out within their area to ensure that quality standards are maintained
7. Liaise with the RCAHMS, Historic Scotland, The National Museums of Scotland, The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), The Council for Scottish Archaeology and other national and international archaeological organisations

In addition, some local authority archaeological services offer:
8. Promotion of research into archaeology within their area in association with universities and other bodies
9. Liaison with schools and colleges
10. Interpretative projects, publications, displays and community outreach programmes
