Building Bridges

The RCAHMS Annual Review for 2010-2011 is now available to read as an online PDF. Titled Building Bridges, the focus of this year’s review is the work we do in collaboration with our many partners and stakeholders.

Highlights include our archaeological, aerial and industrial surveyors working with Historic Scotland, recording landscapes ranging from the remote reaches of the Shetland Islands to the vanishing mining landscapes of the Central Belt; the BBC commissioning expert researchers from the RCAHMS National Collection of Aerial Photography to find 3D imagery from the Second World War for a television documentary; and our conservators working alongside English Heritage, preserving one of Britain’s most important collections of 19th and early 20th century architectural photography.

Writing in the foreword for the Annual Review, RCAHMS Chairman John Hume, and Chief Executive Diana Murray, said “Telling the ongoing story of Scotland’s built environment is a task that involves people from all over the world.

There is a global community, both public and professional, with a passionate interest in recording and understanding our nation’s archaeological, architectural and industrial heritage. What is clear is that by working together – both at home and abroad – we can do a great deal to increase knowledge of Scotland’s national and cultural identity, and engage new audiences with the historic environment.

Working with others – from our fellow National Collections, cultural bodies, governments and the media, to museums, galleries, universities, schools, local groups and individuals – makes a significant contribution to the Scottish Government’s agenda for sustainable economic growth through the cultural elements of the national performance framework. Partnerships and collaborations are at the heart of a healthy community. Everyone has a role to play and something to contribute.”
