RCAHMS survey Meadowbank Sports Centre

With the long-term future of Meadowbank the subject of continuing public debate, RCAHMS Threatened Building Survey has recorded the architectural detail of the sports complex, velodrome and old stadium while they are still in full working use.

Designed by Edinburgh City Council Architects Department and built in 1968, the Sports Centre was the main venue for the 1970 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games, and also hosted the 1986 Commonwealth Games. The velodrome’s importance in developing Scottish sporting stars has recently been highlighted by the success of multi-Olympic medal winner Sir Chris Hoy, who first took up track cycling at Meadowbank.

In addition to this new survey of Meadowbank, RCAHMS Scran website has an extensive collection of original photographs from the 1970 Commonwealth Games.

Threatened Building Survey has also recently surveyed the other major building built for the 1970 Games, the Royal Commonwealth Pool, which closed for renovation at the end of June 2009. These images will soon be available for viewing on Canmore. The team will be visiting Glasgow in the near future to survey the site of the forthcoming 2014 Commonwealth Games before development work begins.
