Aberdeenshire

"A substantial chunk carved out of central Aberdeenshire that stretches from the foothills of the Cairngorms, through the grain-girnel of the Garioch, to the coastal villages of Collieston and Newburgh. A landscape of rich farmland, small towns, country kirks and above all Castles…for this is Castle Country"

Aberdeenshire - Donside and Strathbogie: An Illustrated Architectural Guide (Rutland Press, 2006)

This project has been working with communities to explore their built environment and how it connects directly with their Scottish and local heritage. RCAHMS has been working in partnership with the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) to produce an updated version of the popular Illustrated Architectural Guide to Donside and Strathbogie (previously Gordon). The guide covers the architecture of the northeast towns of Huntly, Alford, Ellon, Kintore, and Oldmeldrum among others. In addition teachers in several schools in the area covered by the guide encouraged their pupils to generate material on their local heritage and display their work on the RCAHMS website. Click here to see examples of their work.

RCAHMS can also help you with a rich source of information and a huge selection of drawings and photographs on your local area. Below you will find a range of images from our archive for Donside and Strathbogie.
