"The garden of 17th-century Scotland, and the Texas of Victorian Scotland. So much is compressed within the borders of West Lothian that it represents Scotland and Scottish history in miniature…You will find the great open landscapes of the Pentland Uplands…Versailles at Hopetoun, the magical kirks at Mid Calder and Uphall, the ruins of Lochcote and Kipp…and Livingston - a metamorphosis of oil works to a new city, concealed in wonderfully rolling countryside and dotted with old houses, farms, woods and rivers…"
West Lothian: An Illustrated Architectural Guide (Rutland Press, 1994)
This project has been working with communities to explore their built environment and how it connects directly with their Scottish and local heritage. RCAHMS has been working in partnership with the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) to produce a revised version of the popular West Lothian: An Illustrated Architectural Guide (forthcoming). The volume explores the richness and diversity of the district and it's people; what they built and how well they built.
RCAHMS can also help you with a rich source of information and a huge selection of drawings and photographs on your local area. Below you will find a range of examples for the area of West Lothian.
