Scran offers users direct access to more than 360,000 digital resources for studying heritage and material culture. The resources include images, video clips, podcasts  and Pathfinder teaching packs linked to both the Scottish and English curriculum frameworks.  Basic access to the resource is open to everyone, but subscribers are able to view full-size versions of images, download copyright-cleared resources free-of-charge for educational and personal use and use a range of supporting services designed to make finding and using Scran resources easier.

Once you’re a subscriber, you can:

  • Find resources quickly and easily, using both Simple and Advanced Searches
  • Create your own resources from Scran material, including worksheets, posters and flashcards, by using the ‘Create’ application
  • Save  your favourite Scran resources using ‘Stuff’, and organise them using ‘Albums’
  • Tell your friends about what you’ve found, or upload resources onto your blog, using ‘Share’

Scran is currently one of the largest educational online services in the UK, supporting over 4,000 schools, libraries, colleges and universities. In Scotland, the Scottish Government has offered support to give every primary, special and secondary school access to Scran resources, and more than 4,000 teachers have home subscriptions to the service. Many public libraries, colleges and universities have subscriptions, and Scran currently has more than 500 private individuals who subscribe for personal interest and research.
