Contributing to Canmore

We welcome your contributions into Canmore. The success of this however relies on the trust and goodwill of everyone.

Terms & Conditions

1. When making a contribution please ensure it is civil, considerate and relevant. If you disagree with something please add your own comment to the discussion.
2. If you find unacceptable content, you can flag this for our attention by using the ‘report this’ button. This will be reviewed by RCAHMS.
3. All contributions posted are personal views and are not endorsed or validated by RCAHMS.
4. If you use the site in a way which we consider to be inappropriate, RCAHMS reserves the right to suspend or terminate your account.
5. You must be the rights owner of any material you upload.  That means you may only upload images that belong to you and you may only upload text which you have written.
6. Do not upload images which you have collected from the internet or received from other sources.  These do not belong to you.  Do not copy text from publications or web pages and upload that.  That text does not belong to you.
7. RCAHMS reserves the right to remove any content at its own discretion and which it considers to be inappropriate or illegal.
8. Copyright of all posted material remains with you - as the contributor.
9. By registering and using the upload system, you thereby agree that you will only upload material that legally belongs to you and that you agree to RCAHMS use of your comments and images on its website at www.rcahms.gov.uk until you remove the item.
10. You may remove any of your images or alter the rights you will offer to users at any time using the My Images part of the Settings section provided in Canmore
11. RCAHMS hosts all images uploaded by the public. By using the upload system, you thereby agree to the images uploaded being displayed on the appropriate page of Canmore.
12. RCAHMS will publish your username alongside your uploaded  image, identifying you as the owner of the image.
13. Canmore will provide a form for users to make email contact with you as the rights owner. Your email address will not be displayed to users; only a message area will be shown. As RCAHMS is not responsible for these emails, exercise judgement in responding to them.
 

Frequently Asked Questions

By uploading images am I passing over my copyright?

No, the default setting, if you make no changes, is that copyright remains with you - the creator.  However, users of Canmore will be able to see your images.

Your image will be displayed "all rights reserved"

You may choose to alter the rights you offer to other users.  For example, you may wish to allow other people to use your image. You can do this in the Settings section of Canmore.

Each licence option available in Canmore is explained in Settings / My Images.  Please note that once you have selected and set a Creative Commons Licence, you are unable to revoke this.

RCAHMS offers no advice on whether you should choose a Creative Commons licence and you may wish to take legal advice before you make any selection.

What are the licencing arrangements for images uploaded by the public?

All uploaded images have a default setting of ‘all rights reserved’. Always check the rights or licencing status of each image before using the image for anything other than private research.

What are the licencing arrangements for RCAHMS images?

All images marked with  ©RCAHMS are subject to Crown Copyright protection unless otherwise indicated, and may be reused free of charge for private research and education purposes only.

For any other proposed use, full copyright details and charges can be found on the Using our images page.

For material which is not the copyright of RCAHMS, authorisation for reuse must be sought from the copyright holder. RCAHMS will forward your request to the appropriate person.

Does RCAHMS hold a copy of the images I have uploaded?

Yes, all the images uploaded by the public are held by RCAHMS.

Can I deposit my images and/or other material directly with RCAHMS?

If you have something you would like to deposit to RCAHMS collections, please contact us to discuss it further.

How do I delete an image?

You can only delete an image that you have uploaded. This can be done through Settings and selecting My images.
